The month of February was a hard one! Trina and Tristan spent the month passing illness back and forth. Brian even got in on the action briefly. In the last week of February, Trina and Tristan tried to continue with their busy routines, and got out of the house a couple of times even though neither one was 100%. When Trina got Tristan out of the nursery after a 'Mom's Group' on Thursday (2/26) he felt feverish and the nursery workers remarked that "he wasn't looking so good." Trina was lucky that Tristan just wanted to sleep, because she was in bed herself all afternoon.
By the time Brian got home from work (and had to rush out the door again to his grad class) neither one of them looked very good! Before class Brian took his temperature and it was in the high 102's. He called our pediatrician's nurse and she said to give him lots of Tylenol, monitor him and call back if it gets any higher. Luckily Aunt Lynette came over to help out while Brian was at class.
By 2AM we had reached 103.6 and the on-call doctor was called. We continued to give him Tylenol and at one point bathed him in cold washcloths to try to cool him down. Luckily his temperature did come down and we were all able to sleep a little bit.
Friday morning got us to the doctor's office by 10am (Brian went to school early and came home by 9:30am.) After a diagnosis of "he is looking kinda punky..." from the doctor and a chest X-ray at the hospital, Tristan was admitted to the pediatric unit at Rockingham Memorial Hospital by 12-noon. It was a bit overwhelming for Trina and Brian, but they had little time to worry since they were both really sick themselves at this point.
Tristan was admitted with pneumonia, Trina was diagnosed with Bronchiolitis (walking pneumonia) that afternoon at her own Dr.'s appointment, and by Saturday morning Brian made it to the doctor with the same diagnosis. We kept hearing from the nursing staff how sorry they were that the whole family was sick.
All three of us then got on antibiotics, and Trina kept remarking that at least we were in a hospital with people to help take care of us (or at least take care of Tristan--and let Trina and Brian sleep...)
The worst parts of the experience were the IV that required Tristan to have a splint on his arm to prevent him from bending his arm or ripping the IV out, and the oxygen that he had to be given in the middle of the first night. Other than that, it was mostly just him healing.
The craziest thing about it all is that for most of the time Tristan was downright chipper! Even when he was so feverish that he just wanted to be held while he moaned, anytime a new nurse or doctor would come by he would sit up and smile and even giggle. Everyone was amazed.
By Monday night (four days later) we were released with a nebulizer to continue giving him breathing treatments. We felt tremendous support from all of our different networks of support (family, church, school, friends) and ate quite well that next week (thanks everyone!)
Two new new tricks learned at the hospital: emphatic shaking of the head (no...) while smiling and giggling (this is an especially good one when it is nap time), and a full-body kinesthetic flail while screaming and giggling with joy.
The following pictures are from the end of our time in the hospital after everyone was beginning to feel better. The little red fish toy in Tristan's mouth in the video was given to us by Greta Ann Herin and her husband Diek Wheeler, who with their son Andreas, came to visit us, brought food for Brian and cheered us up a little. (Trina had all of her meals brought by the hospital and friends and family made sure Brian ate three times a day.) The toy quickly became his favorite toy and a great distraction. Thanks GA and Diek!! (And thanks to Park View Mennonite Church for the balloons!)
Other visits that were of great help included Jon & Meredith, Travis, Jack & Julia, Barbara, Ross & Cathy, Rachael.... Lynette was amazing as she came daily, brought snacks, kidnapped Trina for an afternoon, and provided much needed moral support. Thanks so much Lynette!

Exactly one week later (again on Friday at 10AM) we had another visit to the doctor. Tristan got a clean bill of health and his lungs "sound great!". It sure was good to have such wonderful doctors and nurses to take care of us!
On a side note: both Grandmas were quite sick during this time at their respective homes. As of two weeks later, Grandma Nussbaum is still slow to recover. It looks like little guys have a much speedier immune system!
